How to Pass Google Video Verification on the First Attempt

3 min readReinstate GBP

Google has moved most categories from postcards to live video verification. The rules are strict, largely undocumented, and a rejection tells you nothing about which part failed.

Attempts are also limited in practice. After several rejections the option often disappears and the profile goes to manual review. So the first recording is the one that matters.

What the recording has to prove

A reviewer is checking three things, and all three have to be visible in one continuous take:

  1. That the location exists and is where you say it is.
  2. That the business operating there matches your chosen category.
  3. That you personally have authority over it.

Everything below follows from those three.

The shot list

Record in this order. Do not stop, do not cut, do not switch apps.

Start outside. Film the street, then pan to the building. Get the street sign or a recognisable landmark in frame so the location can be placed. Then get your signage with the business name clearly legible.

Show the address. A number on the door, a plaque, or a piece of business mail held up at the entrance. This is the step people skip, and it is one of the most common reasons for rejection.

Walk inside without stopping the recording. The continuity between outside and inside is part of what is being verified. Cutting here reads as two unrelated clips.

Show the workspace and your category evidence. A dentist films the chair and the equipment. A restaurant films the kitchen. A locksmith films the key-cutting machine and the stock. The reviewer is matching what they see against the category you selected — generic office footage proves nothing.

Prove you manage the place. Open the till. Unlock the back office. Show the booking system or the point-of-sale logged in. Show branded documentation, invoices or headed paper. Anything a customer could not do.

What gets you rejected

  • Stopping and restarting. The take has to be unbroken. This is the number one failure.
  • No legible address anywhere in the video. Signage with the business name is not enough on its own.
  • Filming a residential address on a profile that displays its location. If you work from home, the profile has to be configured as a service-area business with the address hidden before you record.
  • Category mismatch. Filming an empty room when your category implies specialised equipment.
  • Someone else recording it. The person filming has to be able to demonstrate management authority. Sending a friend to film the shopfront does not work.
  • Poor light or shaky footage. If the reviewer cannot read your signage, it does not count.

Before you press record

Walk the route once without recording. Check that the signage is legible in the current light, that you have a piece of addressed mail to hand, and that you can get from outside to your category evidence without stopping.

Charge the phone. Record landscape. Keep it under five minutes — longer is not better, and a long recording with the key evidence buried in it is worse than a tight three-minute take.

Service-area and home-based businesses

If you have no premises a customer visits, the setup work comes first: the profile must be a service-area business with the address hidden, and the service area must be one you can plausibly cover. Then the recording shifts to your vehicle, your branded equipment, your stock and your documentation rather than a shopfront.

Getting that configuration right before you record is most of the job. We handle this end to end — including the cases where the verification option has disappeared from the dashboard entirely, which is a different problem with a different fix.
